Case Study
As part of my senior capstone project at Herron (spring 2019), I was tasked to find an existing problem in the world and work to solve it through design. As I’ve always had a great deal of interest in space and the prospect of space exploration, I felt that this would be the perfect opportunity to take a closer look at problems pertaining to this. Through research and surveys, I found that there is currently both a generally misinformed public that lacks awareness of space exploration as well as a lack of funding for NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) and of space exploration in the United States. Through further research, I found that apparel companies have been successful in both raising funds and generating awareness of various causes. As there currently isn’t any apparel companies on the market whose proceeds go toward funding for space exploration, this seemed to be the perfect opportunity to pursue this for the project.
Now let us introduce Space Age, a not-for-profit apparel company who would partner with NASA. Through Space Age, 100% of their profits would go towards NASA’s Space Exploration Program. Through this, it would directly help in raising funding for NASA and for space exploration. Through Space Age’s website, it would include an online shop, where their products and apparel would be promoted and sold. As well, the website would also provide users with news and articles of the latest developments in space exploration, which would work directly towards informing the public of this. Also, Space Age would accept donations that would go towards NASA’s Space Exploration Program, which would provide users with an alternative way to show their support without having to make any purchases. Through Space Age, this would work to both spread public awareness and raise funding for space exploration.
