Everything Burns, Kinetic Type

Everything Burns, Kinetic Type

Animation

Case Study

As part of my junior year of VCD studies at Herron (fall 2017), Everything Burns is an animation making use of an audio clip from Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight (a personal favorite movie of mine) that makes use of only color and type to visually convey the scene.

For those who are unfamiliar with the scene, it occurs as the Joker is presenting fellow mobsters with the bank money he’d successfully stolen, where things take an “unexpected” turn when the Joker burns the money in front of them.

As far as type goes, the choice to use various weights of Gill Sans for the mobster and various weights of Futura and Futura Condensed for the Joker was made to illustrate just how similar the two are as people and criminals with the differences between the two being more subtle with the distinct differences coming from the humanistic qualities of Gill Sans conveying the humanity of the mobster and the geometric qualities of Futura to convey the lack of this humanity and how removed the Joker is of this.
